Tips for Mold Prevention

Mold spores can be present in any home, but need the presence of moisture to grow. When you control the moisture in your home, you can also control indoor mold growth.

Increase Ventilation: Moist places, like bathrooms and showers can have recurring mold growth. Increasing the ventilation with a fan or open window can help reduce humidity and keep mold to a minimum.

Fix Plumbing Leaks Immediately: If you have a plumbing issue or leak, get it fixed immediately – even small leaks can lead to mold. Thoroughly dry all items that were wet as soon as possible.

Maintain Gutters: Make sure all your roof gutters are regularly cleaned and maintained.

Use Proper Landscaping: The ground around your foundation should slope away from your home so water doesn’t collect at the foundation.

Maintain Air Conditioning Systems: Keep drain lines unobstructed and drip pans clean to avoid moisture build-up.

Keep Low Indoor Humidity: Make sure your home’s humidity is below 60%. Use a dehumidifier for problem spaces and install a humidity alarm http://www.controlproductsonline.com/humidity-indicator-sensor-controller-alarm-products-c-6-l-en.html to alert you of high humidity levels.

Vent Moisture Producing Appliances: Clothes dryers, kerosene heaters and stoves can produce moisture. Make sure they are well vented.

If you already have a mold problem, act quickly to remedy it. The longer mold grows, the more damage may occur.
